Derbi

DERBI comes from DERivado de BIcicleta (literally: derived from the bicycle).

Derbi is a Spanish factory, founded in 1922 by Siméon Rabas Singla. Derbi's origins began with a little bicycle workshop in the village of Mollet near Barcelona. In Mollet near Barcelona repaired, assembled, sold and rented bikes. Together with his brothers he also made frames for Spanish motorcycle brands.

Focus on motorcycles

In 1950 they focused entirely on the production of motorcycles. The first motorcycles were presented in November of that year. They were 50cc models. Soon there were models with 95, 98 and 250 cc. In 1955 followed a modern 350cc two-cylinder and a 125cc model. In the meantime, the brand name had already changed to Derbi. The engines were all two-stroke. They mainly concentrated on the 50cc class but in 1964 there was a 75- and a 125cc model.

On November 7, 1950, the company changed its name to the Nacional Motor SA. Just prior to this, at that summer's Barcelona Trade Fair, the company unveiled its first real motorcycle, the Derbi 250.

The speed

Derbi achieved many successes in the light road race classes, particularly with driver Angel Nieto. They also wanted to take very fast 50cc models into production, but the changed Spanish legislation that set the maximum speed for mopeds at 40 km / hour made it hard to do so. That's why Derbi turned the wheel around and started making light motorcycles and scooters. In 2001 Derbi was taken over by Piaggio. In 2011, the Derbi Factory was closed in Spain after much commotion. The factory left for the homeland of Piaggio, in Italy.

Meanwhile there are quite a few motorbikes (and motors) around Derbi, including the Senda 50 R (off-road), Senda 50 SM (on-road) and the GPR 50 (on-road). You also sometimes see the older Derbi FDS50, a competitor of the (more popular) Honda MT50.

Since 2006, Derbi has supplied its mopeds with a new type of engine. The biggest difference is that the coolant now flows through the engine block itself instead of just through the cylinder.
